Why did spain engaged worldwide colonization?

Initially they were looking for a shorter and easier route to India (that's why Native Americans are still called "Indians". Columbus though he was in India. They decided to do their own version of Manifest Destiny but really once they discovered Gold though they really started colonizing. The Aztec account of the conquest of Mexico describes them as seizing the Gold like monkeys.
