Can i sue an ex for pain and suffering?

I was in a relationship for about ten months. This guy beat me more then twice a week every week for this time period. I'm now 5 months with his child. I now have to see a therapist every week to sort out what goes through my mind over this ordeal. My question is how would I go about suing him for the pain and suffering I've gone through?
